Every New Beginning Comes from Some Other’s Beginning’s End…The Job Edition.

Sometimes in your life you’re going to reach a point where things HAVE to change to keep your sanity & your wallet in check. This time of change that needs to take place is my job. By March 31st I need to have a new job. I’m really honestly starting to think I fell into a comfort trap here. I make an okay salary & I have benefits. Please don’t get me wrong because I’m VERY GRATEFUL to have a job which is where my problem arises. I’m scared to leave my current job because I fear the worse case scenarios.

Having just bought my first home & having a mortgage by myself is one of the things keeping here. I fear that if I leave & don’t like the new job or it just doesn’t work out I’ll be up shit’s creek. I have savings but right now I can’t afford to be jobless or health insurance less. However I have to 2 college degrees that are literally just growing dust in their frames and in my mind. It’s a problem…

Right now I can pay my bills fine & live comfortable but I’m not happy. There are many factors, for example CONSTANT Sports talk, is one that is driving me insane. Yes it’s a job full of men & I’m the only girl but I just can’t take listening to another Yankee game & then the fretting over it & the yelling during the game & the running to the conference room to see the plays & then the discussing & then the “What should have happened” for another yearly season. It’s a mania here & it’s all year long whether it’s basketball, football, golf, Nascar, baseball, & I don’t know what else. I have to get out of here.

I’m going to have to take this risk leaving. I have sent countless applications on career builder, monster.com, hotjobs, jobfox…you name it but no bites. I’m seriously considering going to an agency or having a professional do my resume because I guess there isn’t any on it that’s OOo Oooo WE HAVE TO HER! I have to work on writing a successful cover letter too. I can’t flake out on this again. I just can’t.

This is a resolution from last year that I regret not doing. I have to do it. I have to get over thid fear & be determined that I will get a job that’s right for me. You have to take risks…I’m just hoping it will be successful.

Have any of you recently got a new job or in a similar boat as me? Want to leave but isn’t sure how to get in that New Door? Any Advice?

Melanie, you should consider signing up on Linked in and link to old colleagues, school mates etc. - the site also enables you to write your resumé...

I use the site to keep in tough with my network of people, which comes in handy from time to time - and I have already had 3 joboffers eventhough I am not actively looking for a new job...

Well it is free and it will get your name out there....

:o) Cross my fingers that something interesting will come your way.

I say you have to go for it, but make sure you'll be able to deal with any repercussions that may arise. I quit my job because I was miserable there. I'm unemployed now but honestly that's my choice...i'm moving to a different city soon so there's no point in getting a full time job, plus blah blah I have my reasons! Anyway - you have to be happy with your work, end of story. Maybe you should just focus on nothing but finding a new job so then you can quit with another one lined up. Good luck, I understand how hard of a decision this is!

My husband was out of a job for a year. I'm paralyzed with fear about quitting one job without a SURE thing first. But that's just me and I'm slightly (very) paranoid, so don't listen to me...

I totally know how you feel. I left my job in August for a new job with benefits but ended up not liking it. No I'm stuck here but looking for something new. Just hang in there, it took me over 6 mos to find this job so I know it takes a lot of time and patience. Having a great cover letter and a resume re-write can't hurt.

Ah! I'm in the same boat! My job is stable but I hate it! I feel so guilty looking for another job when there are so many out there with nothing, but you can be happy unless the thing you're doing is something you love. And the hardest part is starting. You just have to decide you're doing it, and then the rest is easy. Send a few resumes out, and see what happens! Good luck, girl! I'll cross my fingers for both of us!

i would find a job before you leave...i think using a service could be a good idea and how about some ear plugs?

Good luck, honey. I know it's really hard to make a move when you're so comfortable but you have to follow your heart. xoxo

Good luck! I felt complacent at my last job, which I eventually got downsized from due to the recession. It sucks right now, but keep sending our your resume!

Its always hard to change as there is always a factor of fear but I think you should go for it. The best you can do is to make yourself happy...and I bet a new job would make you feel great! Hugs and kisses, darling

I completely understand the comfort thing. I graduated college with a diploma and for another 2 years afterwards I continued working at a coffee shop. I liked the hours, and was friends with all of the people there. It was a comfort zone thing for sure.
I am finally using my diploma and it's great. I did it because my life was changing and I needed a different schedule.
Sometimes our comfort zone is our way of hiding from things.
Taking the leap can be good as long as you are prepared.

Last year I was forced to leave the job I had for almost 5 years. Long story but I was unfairly fired. At first I was HEARTBROKEN - like I said, I'd been there for almost 5 years. I could do that job in my sleep. And although sometimes it drove me NUTS I was comfortable there.

At first I was petrified. And I still am not totally back on top (then again, I think that comes from being fired over quitting AFTER finding a new job). I did find, though, that getting away from that job was a good thing. It was holding me back. Once it was gone, I went back to school and I'm pursuing something that is going to make me happier in the long run. Who knows how long I would have been stuck in my rut?

So... don't get fired. But if you aren't happy, then leave. Life is too short to be unhappy.

I think this fear comes with any new decision in our lives. So many people are so afraid (myself included) to do anything and they remain paralyzed by fear never really moving forward. I have faith that you will do great. Stay on track remain positive and you will do great. Better to go for it than to live with regrets later!!

Girl ~ I am so right there with you. I like what I do, but I loath where I do it. I call my place of employment, "The Snake Pit" & that is just what it is. I can't trust anyone. Any one of them will through you under the bus in a hot second, but I am a single mom of two little boys & I am the one who provides their health benefits... See my point? On Tuesday of this week I realized, I'm Stuck~! I can't move up any ladders here. It's either take it or leave it for me! Good Luck!

I started a new job in November, and I already want to leave. It's a short term contract so I have to find something else by May. Good luck! xx

hey melanie! back from ikea and of course i loved it. i hadn't been in a long while so everything looked new and fresh to me. a girl could go mad i tell ya, mad in that place! my sister was really the one who needed alot of new splashes to her apartment and she was successful. she made out really great!

i had one idea in your job search, have you ever checked out usajobs.gov? it's all current government jobs and you can get on their e-mail list where they will constantly send you new openings. if you need any advice let me know, i used to work for the government and while i'm not sure what your degree is in, it wouldn't hurt for you to check out that site now and then. you can search through whichever agency you'd like. just a thought. bye for now, have a great night! ;)

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I'm bored with my job and there isn't enough pay so I'm trying to look for the right position but its slow going.

Oh Melanie, this is a tough one! sometimes we can’t change or control the actions of others, but you can change and control your response perhaps~ I believe any workplace is like high school sometimes!

All the best*

not currently but i have been there before. prior to my current job, i was at a place i hated. like LOATHED. and like you i was whoring out my resume like it was nobody's business. finding a new job didn't happen quickly but when it did, i was so happy with my decision.

:( I understand. I was there too - in Oct. I took the risk, made the jump, and it turns out, I think I'm about to be let go. I haven't worked for a week...
BUT what is a life without risks? I have no regrets. I would have always been wondering "what if?"

I personally think that if you're really not happy where you're working now, you should totally find another one. I think you're doing the right thing by searching for a new one while keeping the one you have now so you'll still have money coming in.

Take the risk! Quit and feel the fear and worry. Make room for something bigger and better in your life!

i am struggling finding a job that I love here in Switzerland. Before we moved I had just graduated with a masters to do therapy but I can't do it here as my degree doesn't transfer and I don't speak the language! Therefore, just looking for random things. so not fun :(

I can't say that I'm in a similar position at this time in my life, Melanie. However, you are such a smart, talented, amazing person, and I think that any corporation would be happy to have you on board. You just need to find one that is perfect for you!! :)

I've worked for my step-dad's business for almost four years now. It's not the most exciting thing and I certainly don't consider it a "real job." So I'm certainly not the best person for job advice. But it's the easiest thing for me to do while finishing college. I work with all guys, but fortunately never dealt with a whole lot of the "guy talk" you face at your work. But I can see how that could get annoying.

Making a big change like that can certainly be scary, but if you feel you need to move on a get a new job, then go for it. Start searching for the right job for you. You will find it! And you will be much happier about the change when you do!

Melanie, I understand what you are going through.

Read this: http://www.micealiling.com/2009/12/no-plan-plan.html

I knew I wasn't happy and I couldn't wait to leave but I had no plans, no back-up plan...but I just left. You don't have to do what I did...but don't do something you don't love :)

sweetie i totally know how you feel right now. i left my job after being unhappy but now i'm living with my parents and don't have a job! i had to make a decision. be really unhappy or take a leap and find something that i love. i know you will find something. hang in there!

I also think this year will have to be my year to move on from my current job. Not only do I have a similar problem to you re: the sports talk (in my case, it's all about soccer, all the time!), I also think I may have reached the end of the road, as I'm getting really bored of it now. Good luck!

I know that feeling. It drives me nuts how they have all of these sites out there for jobs, but then you get nothing. I would try a staffing agency. They can be helpful. Well, hope that helps! :o)Best wishes and blessings with it all!
