The other day I was in Pier 1 Imports and noticed they had these really nice wine glasses for a cheap price but the glass was weighted & looked beautiful. I picked up 4 of them & got out my White Riesling Wine last night & low behold Cj turns to me and says,
"Babe do you have any White Wine Glasses? These are Red Wine Glasses."
Huh? I guess I never realized that there are different types of wine glasses. So I thought I'd share with you what I found.
Red Wine Glasses
"Glasses for red wine are characterized by their rounder, wider bowl, which increases the rate of oxidation." - Wikipedia
White Wine Glasses
" White wine glasses vary enormously in size and shape, from the delicately tapered Champagne flute, to the wide and shallow glasses used to drink Chardonnay. Different shaped glasses are used to accentuate the unique characteristics of different styles of wine." - Wikipedia
There is a whole process of oxidization of the wines which affects the taste of the wine. Red Wine needs oxidization so the wine glass has that inward bowl. The white wine sometimes needs LESS to bring out the flavor so the glass sometimes has a smaller mouth on it.
There is so much more but I thought I would give you guys a taste of different wine glasses so you at least can see the difference for future purchases!
I'm heading to Ikea today with my snow day so I will be back later to show you my new purchases! =)

I tend to think that in the whole scheme of things no one who's not a wine snob would care. But maybe I just hang out with low-life, uncultured people who consider anything not plastic or paper pretty snazzy.
hhmmm.. i didn't know that... course i don't know much about wine.. just which one's i like :-)
i love ikea!!
have fun!
You're too cute!! Wait until you see how much ROOM bar ware takes up. We have 8 white wine glasses, 8 red wine glasses, 8 martini glasses, 8 champagne flutes, 8 hurricane glasses and 8 rocks glasses. Oh, and a sake set.
It's unreal. But soooo pretty!
What is the truth about leftover Chinese food? Some of it tastes good the next day!
Good luck with your shopping!
I love wine and wine bottles, wine glasses, wine everything! And I appreciate people who drink a glass of wine at dinner or before bed. <3
Haha! Even though I don't drink my father (a wine expert kind of) taught me at a young age the importance of choosing the right wine glass. If I see a dark color in a white wine glass I get really anxious. It's weird.
I had no idea there was a differnce haha! I guess I just figured the white glasses were for champagne, which I guess is white wine. Eh, now I know! Thanks for the education :)
The only reason I know that there is a difference is because when I was registering for my wedding I wanted wine glasses and the kind that matched my other glasses (my champagne flutes, martini glasses and margarita glasses) had both white and red options.
Being that I don't drink red wine, I chose the white. But had I not gotten married and been registering I would have had no idea there was a difference!
I knew there were different glasses for different types of wine, but I've never adhered to the rules. To me, wine is wine. I'll drink it out of a coffee cup if I have to. :)
Have fun in Ikea,sweetie...They have a great selection of different glasses:) You will love it! Kisses and hugs
ps: I am hosting a sweet necklace GIVEAWAY today :) ... Please, join in!
lol makes sense, now that I think about it I do see red in wider glasses and white in thinner glasses. I didn't think much about it now until I read your post!
Oh yes, this is very important to some people! I will drink wine wherever, after a glass I won't notice the difference anyway :)
You arise beauteous in the horizon of the heavens
Oh living Aten who creates life.
When you shine forth in the Eastern horizon you fill every land with your beauty.
You are so beautiful: you are great; gleaming and high over every land.
Your rays embrace the lands and all you have created;
You are Re and reach out to all your creations, and hold them for your beloved Son.
You are afar, but your rays touch the earth;
Men see you, but know not your ways.
Thanks...wonderful girl!
Suddenly I'm wanting a wine glass of wine! ;)

I am obsessed with big red wine glasses! I hope you find lots of great things at IKEA!
You are so cute! Someone pointed that out to me, to which my response was "It's either that ok the plastic cup. Your choice :) "
They put their white wine in the red wine glass!
LOL!
I hardly drink wine (i'm a vodka girl) and I can't handle anymore glasses in my kitchen! LOL :)
I knew there was a difference, but I won't pretend that I knew what that difference is so thanks.
I mean really, I'd drink the stuff out of a coffee cup if that was all you had.
I didn't even know there was a difference either until last year lol.
I love red wine, but drink out of a white wine glass!!!! go figure....
never knew that, however still the wine tastes delicious regardless of the mistaken shape ;-P
Fab post, darling!
Riedel makes the most amazing glasses and now Target carries them!
xoxox,
CC
Great wine glasses, I love having both types :)
I know how you feel, I learned all about this stuff around my wedding when we were registering for stemware... now that I own beautiful sets of both, I would never go back!!
oxo
Ah yes, I knew nothing about wine glasses either until I had to design a bottle label for a wine company. They taught me about the different shapes - there are even more types of glasses than this - too many to keep track of if you ask me!
Haha I didn't know this either! xoxo
Love it, you just taught me something new and specially now that am getting in to my wine lol :)!!
Well first off, now I need a glass of wine and second, you just made my measly wine glasses look, well, measly. Perhaps I will go shopping tomorrow for these beauties!
I knew there were different wine glasses, but I didn't know the reason. Wine is just extremely fascinating! Makes me want to go out and buy wine glasses too :)
I knew there were different glasses. Had no idea that they were for red and white wine, though, or that it had to do with oxidation. It's true. You learn something new every day. :)
