My First Cake Decorating Class!! Cupcakes Galore!!

“It’s not the wand, it’s the wizard.”Cake Boss

One of my new found treats is my mother’s Cake Decorating Class. Where is it? My old high school. There is a beautiful thing called Adult Education Classes that almost every high school has in the Fall & the Spring. My mother is currently the teacher of the cake decorating class & I’m one of the students who of course gets there on time each week. For years I’ve seen her make roses, decorate birthday cakes, make delicious icing out of butter & a few bags of powdered sugar, & dazzle me with ribbons of icing & a few tricks. Well…now it’s my turn to learn.

I’ve decided to share with you guys a few lil tips I will be learning each week. It’s difficult to just jump in to decorating a full fledged cake so instead we are working with cupcakes first.  There are several things you actually do need to successfully decorate a cake.

*Cake decorating Metal Tips – Wilton makes a set of them
*Icing & lots of it!
*Food Coloring
*Wax Paper
*Cake Decorating Nails with Base on top
*Cake Comb
*Disposable Decorating Icing Bags
*Flat-handled Spatula

For basic decorating those are the supplies you need. With AC Moore & Michael’s coupons everything is actually quite affordable. We practiced making the icing which is basically, 2 sticks of butter, a bag of powdered sugar, & some vanilla extract. Tonight with that icing we did Roses. I love cupcake roses. They look so hard but honestly it’s not that bad. Once you’ve been shown it in front of you it’s so much easier than looking at a piece of paper. Here's some Quick Tips!!

QUICK TIP #1:  Making an Icing Rose you need a Cake Needle, Wax Paper, Scissors, & some icing. Why Wax Paper? Well if you put a dab of icing on the base of the needle then slap a small piece of wax paper on top of it, the rose will then be easier to pull off the base because you pull off the wax paper instead!

QUICK TIP #2: Make the roses then put them in the freezer until you’re going to place them on the cake. Not too too long, just enough time that they get a lil hard so when removing them from the wax paper it’s Easy as pie!

My Finished Cupcake with My Rose! =)
This class was so much fun! It’s 5 girls all around my age & my lil cousin is doing it too. She doesn’t shut up but I’m hoping this will soften my friendship with her. I’m beginning to understand the need for a lil stress reliever every once & a while. I feel so good after this class because I played a lil. I didn’t have to worry about a thing! Just what I needed. Happy Decorating!

I wonder what my mom will doing next week for class!! All photos are mine from Tonight's Class! =)
