Progress & then Carded to buy an R-rated movie.

There comes a time where you will find yourself doing simple tasks & it brings the thought to your mind that, "Oh Woa I'm actually doing this!!". I'm not going to go crazy & say that I am now a woman who knows how to cook or this is me becoming a Stepford Wife like Nicole Kidman up there...but I'm going to say that I realized that I know how to help someone prepare a meal.

I'm 24 years old & the torch has not been passed to me yet to cook the holiday meal. But this Christmas instead of just setting the table, I did a lil more. I opened the craberry sauce cans & poured it into bowls, I grated the Parmesan cheese for the lasagna, I made the sugar cookies & used the cookie cutters to make the lil trees, wreaths, & men, mixed the doughs for the cookies too, I brought the food to the table from the kitchen, & cut up the fresh mozzarella. I didn't cook besides the cookies but I did something. I am continuing the learning process of becoming that cook that I will have to become one day. You don't just wake up one day & say, "I am a cook!" or "I am the President". It's a journey.

Every Sunday I used to go to the cooking demos at Williams Sonoma but for the holiday season the store takes a small hiatus. Totally understandable. But looking back on the demo sheets I totally realized it is teaching me more than I thought. People on their Christmas wish list put that they would want a French Press for coffee. Due to those demos I actually knew what it was I was looking at. I guess what I'm trying to say is that these holidays made me feel the progress I've made with certain things.

It's not a progress that I can easily take a picture of at this moment but I can feel it. Not just with cooking but with alot of things. This year I've had a list of accomplishments that I just can't believe & a list of downfalls that just weigh so heavily upon me, but with all of it there is progress. I'm still wandering aimlessly from day to day but I can't wait to see what will happen in this next year. I'm looking foward to the waiting to see what this progress will turn into.

Ironically I had planned to write about this yesterday about how I feel like I'm growing up & learning & can feel who I am seeping through, when today the complete opposite happened. I went to buy the movie, District 9 and went to the self-checkout in Walmart when the most RIDICOLOUS thing happened. I got carded to buy the movie. I had NO idea that you can be carded in certain stores when you buy an R-rated movie. But I'm sorry when the guy told me, "Miss you could totally pass for 17. I need to see some I.D. please" I almost lost it. I stared at him blankly & said, "Your kidding?". He wasn't & to make matters worse he then said, "Well look at it this way. When your 40 you can still get a 25 year old doctor." I, again, just stared. I could understand if I was buying porn, but an R-rated movie????? It was just too weird.

Well I may not look my age, but I'm feeling what it's like to be an adult & I like it despite the few curves in the road. I enjoyed my Christmas. I helped prepare the dinner, bought presents for my family, opened cute lil presents, & all-in-all it was a successful day! I did sleep til noon on Saturday because I was so tired but this will go down as a good Christmas. My grandparents also didn't ask me for great-grandchildren this year which made me ever so happy.

Tomorrow I'm going to be working on my to do list for 2010. I'm going to find my resolutions i made last year for this year & see if I did any of them. I don't know if I did. I always like the dreams & hopes of new.

Was there ever a moment in your life when you felt the progress?? Felt like you were truly an adult? Felt like a real person?
I'd love to hear.

I think it is very funny when they card me for movies lol! and the one thing that makes me feel like an adult is paying bills, there is nothing like having bills to make you feel like you are no longer a child lol. Now that I live on my own without family in San aNtonio I also felt the progress into adulthood, sometimes I want to run backwards into being a chid lol

Melanie, I wouldn't mind being carded at all. Hahaha! R-rated movies are for 18 above and you look like 17 that's why.

PS... I don't know how to cook and I really don't know my way in my own kitchen. But I survived, I haven't been kicked out of my house up to now. LOL. xoxo from Manila.

These moments of feeling the progress hit me out of nowhere...sometimes I think OMG I'm becoming my Mother but then I realize that's not such a bad thing. I'm glad you enjoyed your Christmas and I am SO looking forward to next year too! XO

Wow, I cannot believe you got carded. That sucks.

But at least you're making culinary progress! Good luck on that!

This is why I love reading the writing of twenty-somethings, because it's a time of tremendous introspection and determining direction in life. When we're young we want to be older, when we're older..

All I can say Melanie, is feel flattered. You look younger than your age, and although society places too much emphasis on youth you'll look back on times like this one day
and smile.

This moment, this day, will never come again. So I say enjoy it and don't look too far back or ahead.

I somewhat felt like an adult when I had the dude. Although, I still have my kid moments despite being a mama!

I know exactly what you mean about 'becoming' an adult, and I'm actually slightly older than you. Glad you had a good day, and you should probably feel flattered about being carded (although I would definitely be pissed off!!) xx

I've never been carded for a movie... odd. How good was District 9? I loved it!!!

But great to hear to you progressing when it comes to cooking! Keep it up!

I got carded for Milk last winter. Like anyone would "sneak in" to that movie haha. I always look super young, but one day I will be happy for it...I hope haha

this post is so positive! I'm envious of your optimism. I am such a whiny little witch lately. I know its awful, but I cannot stop complaining. I like how your recognize you've had difficulties this year (b/c let's face it we all do), but you've made so many accomplishments! Cooking may seem like a smaller feat, but learning how to feed yourself is not only nourishment for your body, but mind and soul too. I am working on cooking too because my dorm room has a kitchen this year and sometimes I still find myself buying TV dinners but the few nights a do make an honest dinner I feel so proud of myself!

Honey feeling like an adult is overrated. I say do the adult things you need to do and let it just be a part of who you are.

I want to see District 9 I have to get off the bed and out into the snow to the video store to rent it though.

Cooking comes like must things, when it has too.

I still get ID'd for things like matches - its so annoying. I guess going by the research people who look younger then their age are suggested to live longer - so I guess we have that in our favour at least!

I love the feeling of accomplishing some cooking - the same goes for baking - of managing to bake a cake without burning it always gives a great feeling!

Yes, of course And I was amazed @ that time.

I got id'd in the supermarket buying some wine. I'm 23, and the legal age in the UK is 18. I wasn't sure whether to be flattered or not.
Instead of paying rent (I live at home for now) I help out by cleaning and doing some of the cooking. I feel like a 'grown up' sometimes, even though I'm not sure what that really is!

I would have laughed .. but for a movie comon then again it could be flattering.

I'd take it as a compliment. When you are 39 and get carded for alcohol, it's amazing!

Actually, the first time I felt like a real adult was when a little boy (6,7,8 years old) called me sir......I was 21. 6 years ago.
You do look young. But I wouldn't give you 17. You just look like your real age. :)

Hey Melanie, thanks for the kind words and consistent following! I really appreciate it. Whenever I read your blog it reminds me that we're both in pretty much the same boat when it comes to getting through our young lives. Got carded for a movie huh? lol I would take it as a compliment! I complain about getting carded to get into the bar, and then getting carded again when I order a drink. But one day... we won't be carded and it might actually be a sad, sad, day... we'll look old. How was the movie?

Good for you!

but setting the table is a lot of work too!
im serious.

I think for me I really started feeling like an adult this past year, when I turned 25. Yes, I still get carded and may look young, but I feel like I am slowly maturing, which is a good thing. I still have a lot of growing up to do, but I wouldn't trade my life experiences for the world. :) You shouldn't either.

It sucks looking young, even though everyone tells us we'll reap the reward when we're 40 (or whatever odd thing that check out guy told you). We have ALL these responsibilities (work, bills, etc.) but yet we can't even buy liquor or a rated R movie without being hassled and embarrassed. Blurg. :(

So the past year I have felt very grown up (moving out, paying for everything myself, etc.) but I still get treated by the general public like a 16-year-old b/c of my looks. It's very frustrating and kind of insulting...

I'm still waiting to totally feel like a grown up, I guess.
